The client — a real estate agent — couldn’t update their WordPress website because their Bluehost hosting was almost completely full (96%). This caused failed theme and plugin updates, dashboard errors, a slow backend, and media upload issues, with no clear idea of why the storage was full.
What Was Discovered
Old subdomain files still existed on the server, along with outdated backups inside /public_html/, large log files, leftover files from previous site versions, and staging site directories that were never deleted — together filling nearly the entire 20GB hosting limit.
What Was Done
- Full backup for safety — created a complete hosting backup using FileZilla before touching anything.
- Manual file inspection — checked every folder in cPanel → File Manager and mapped which directories belonged to the live site, which were old subdomains, which were safe to remove, and which files were oversized or corrupted.
- Safe cleanup process — removed files one directory at a time to avoid breaking the live site: deleted inactive subdomain folders, removed old backups, cleared unnecessary logs, cleaned leftover theme/plugin files. Verified everything before deleting; WordPress core files untouched throughout.
- Hosting optimization — usage dropped 96% → 58% → 27% → 10% as cleanup progressed. The site became stable again and updates started working without errors.
